FACIAL PALSY

Facial palsy is when the muscles on one side of your face become weak or paralysed. The most common causes are conditions such as Bell’s palsy, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, vestibular/facial schwannoma, stroke, or multiple sclerosis. The severity of the weakness can vary depending on where the cells are injured and the severity of the injury. This, as well as the underlying pathology, will influence your rehabilitation potential and prognosis for recovery.

What We Offer

The Neurological Rehabilitation Group has experience treating adults with facial palsy. We will provide a comprehensive assessment to determine your needs. We can help to improve your quality of life, maximise your function and provide you with tailored treatment plans directed towards achieving your goals.

Our therapists are skilled in assessing, treating, and managing people with facial palsy, and preventing any secondary complications. We develop programs for yourself or support people to implement such as stretches and strengthening activities or targeting changes in muscle flexibility, as appropriate. Weakness in the face can be a very confronting thing for a lot of people, and we are passionate about helping you feel confident returning to your normal activities.

Our therapists see a variety of people with facial palsy and provide specialised treatment depending on the client’s goals and current situation. This may include:

  • Advice on eye care and dry eyes/mouth

  • Stretches of eye lids and facial muscles to maintain muscle length whilst inactive

  • Exercise, stretches and taping to help maximise symmetry of facial structures

  • Targeted strengthening of affected muscles as appropriate

  • Advice on strategies for activities that are often difficult (ie. eating, drinking, sleeping)

Our therapists can refer or liaise with health professionals involved in your care including your medical team, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. They will also liaise with your appropriate funding bodies to support your needs.
